  • Volunteer for the Syria Summer Camp – 23rd July to 17 August 2018

    Published 12/07/18

    Dear parent/Carer

Re: Volunteer for the Syria Summer Camp – 23rd July to 17 August 2018

Syria Summer Camp is a project run by Newman Catholic College and supported by Caritas Westminster.  The Syria Summer Camp is dependent upon a strong volunteer base, drawn from diverse walks of life – teachers, parents, senior students and faith communities.  Syria Summer Camp requires over 20 volunteers every day of its operation.  It was born out of a passion to make a difference to the wellbeing of refugee children and their families helping them to be in a better position to learn.  The Camp provides a home of learning for children, hungry to catch up with their education e.g. “booster” sessions in English, Maths and Science as well as theatre trips and fun activities.  In addition to this, there is any opportunity to be on the pastoral support team and assisting counsellors to help youngsters process their experience of fleeing war or persecution and build an identity that works for them in the UK

The Summer Camp operates from 10.00am to 2.00pm, and a minimum of one week’s volunteering is requested.  There is also a need for lunchtime volunteering from 12.30 – 2.00pm.

If you would like further information contact Luisa – School Chaplain.  From 15 July please contact Miss Amanda Refugee Project Leader @ Newman Catholic College on – include your full name and phone number.

  • Hugh Dennis visits The Douay Martyrs Catholic Secondary School

    Published 10/07/18

On Wednesday 4th July, staff and students were treated to a visit from comedy performer and actor Hugh Dennis. Best known for his role in long standing sitcom ‘Outnumbered’, and an ever-present panellist on BBC comedy show ‘Mock the Week’, Hugh gave a talk on many aspects to do with his career. He spoke about his time at Cambridge University, his initial career ‘in charge of Lynx deodorant’ at Unilever, and the difficult switch to full time comedy at the age of twenty nine.

He offered some sound advice to pupils who were unsure of what they wanted to for a career, and urged pupils to not be fixated on being famous, but to simply want to be the best at something which they are good at. Many pupils later noted this to be simple, yet valuable advice in an ‘X-factor generation’ of entertainment. The audience was made up of a range of pupils from years 9 to 12, and included students from creative writing groups, media studies students and ambassadors.

All pupils were then allowed to ask Hugh questions for forty five minutes, and got to find out about other comedians he has worked with, as well as those actors in outnumbered. He gave some great responses and good stories about his career, with his most embarrassing moment in acting taking place in nearby Ruislip!

Thank you to all students for their excellent behaviour on the day, and the staff for nominating pupils for this event

Mr Rogers  Head of Creative Arts Faculty
