World Book Day

Is there a better way to spend an afternoon than bookshop browsing? We don’t think so. That’s why on Monday 5th and Wednesday 7th March, lucky pupils from year 7 had the opportunity to go to Waterstones Uxbridge and spend their World Book Day Tokens. Students leafed through books in the 9-12 and Teen sections for an hour before selecting their books, all the while discussing their preferences with each other and the Waterstones staff. As well as choosing for themselves, the groups also identified books they would like the school library to purchase, giving these keen readers influence over the texts available to every member of our school community. Waterstones described the students involved as a “credit to Douay Martyrs”, emphasising their demonstration of school values throughout the trip, and were so impressed by the informed discussions of books and literature the students engaged in that they have already invited us back to celebrate World Book Day with them in 2019! The trip was an enriching experience for all involved and hopefully will foster a long lasting love of reading.
